Professional Experience
Carole Lowman Pillinger is Professor in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina where she also did her postgraduate work. Dr. Pillinger received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and has completed her graduate coursework in Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Pillinger also serves as Associate Chief of Staff for Education at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. She has recently been named Chairperson of the newly formed Course Director's Section of the Association for Pathology Chairs, which she helped establish, and has been invited to serve on the Executive Board of the Group for Research in Pathology Education (GRIPE). Dr. Pillinger has been involved in education at all grade levels (state and national), including K-12, through her project "Breaking News in Health and Science," an innovative electronic tool used to enhance faculty development and student learning. She is currently involved with the Dean's Committee on Medical Education, a collaborative effort between the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina, with the goal of formulating new programs that will enhance each university's school of medicine with the goal of improving medical education in the State of South Carolina.
