Resistance to infectious agents can often be enhanced by immunopotentiating drugs. However, use of these drugs has been hampered because their effects on the cellular components of the immune system are poorly understood. Dr. Mayer is investigating the effects of natural and synthetic immunopotentiating drugs on the numbers and functional capacities of macrophages, lymphocytes, and their subpopulations by means of flow cytometry. Information concerning the ability of an immunopotentiating drug to enhance immune functions in a particular anatomical site is used to make predictions concerning the effectiveness of the drug in enhancing resistance to virus-induced pneumonia, hepatitis and encephalitis. These predictions are then tested in animal models.
