Research Interests

My research interest centers on mucosal immunology. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a disease of chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract. The causes of human IBD remain unknown. We show for the first time that anti-CXCL10 Ab treatment abrogates colitis in IL-10-/- mice. Understanding the steps in leukocyte migration and activation, and how CXCL10 mediates the host immune response during the progression of inflammatory bowel disease, will help better understand this disease and other inflammatory conditions. Recently I have started a similar project on poorly regulated immune responses to Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, which we are using to induce chronic colitis in IL-10-/- mice. It is my sincere hope that my work will contribute to a better understanding of disease pathogenesis and the development of vaccines as well as inflammation therapeutics in general.

I wish to continue my work in the field of mucosal immunology and inflammation related to chemokine and alternative medicine to treat inflammation. I have found that CXCL10 expressing CD4+ T cells, NK cells, neutrophils and macrophages mediate colitis in IL-10-/- mice by inducing the chemotaxis of leukocytes and activation of dendritic cells to and from the intestinal lamina propria and mesenteric lymph nodes, where they expand reactive Th1 cells. I will continue to dissect the mechanisms of CXCR3 ligand expression by mucosal and CD4+ T cells, NK cells and dendritic cells that are essential for the induction and maintenance of colitis mediated by CXCR3+ Th1 cells.
